(presented in ASL by filmmaker Bryan Horch)
What is it like to be Deaf in Cuba, the fabled isle of cigars, rum and Fidel? This film offers a unique window into the lives of Lisandro, Cuba’s first Deaf university student, his Deaf parents, his CODA girlfriend, and his hard-of-hearing best friend.
They study, work, struggle and enjoy life in their tightly-knit neighborhood in Havana. Their hopes, dreams, and concerns are affected by the peculiarities of life in a very different social system, but are also fundamentally universal.
They eloquently describe their frustrations with the insensitivity of the hearing world to their needs and with the limitations of life with scarce technology and resources. But they never lose sight of the joys of a rich community life and the warm bonds of family and friends
Directed by Bryan Horch & Yadier Lanfernal Galan. 40 minutes. In Cuban Sign Language with English Subtitles
